Our current technology-loving culture celebrates and even worships youth. However, Joseph Marshall, an enrolled member of the Lakota tribe, says, “There are wise people in the world from all walks of life, from many nations and cultures. But there is one unalterable reality: No one who is truly wise is young.” In this enlightening interview with Lisa Garr, Joseph Marshall speaks about the valuable wisdom of elders and other Lakota traditional beliefs as ways to nourish our souls with spiritual wisdom.
Joseph Marshall III was born and raised on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation and is an enrolled member of the Sicangu Lakota (Rosebud Sioux) tribe. Raised in a traditional Lakota household, his first language is Lakota and he knows the ancient tradition of oral storytelling. Joseph taught at the high school and college levels, and developed native studies curriculum as well. Now he writes full time and is the author of Returning to the Lakota Way and The Lakota Way of Strength and Courage.
